JRAC to Offer Monotype Workshop
At the request of many art patrons Meredith Krell and Steve Toornman, renown print makers of Charlevoix, will offer another Monotype workshop, October 20, 10 a.m.—3 p.m. at the Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St. East Jordan.
Three different techniques will be demonstrated Direct painting, Direct—Trace Drawing, and Subtractive Process.
DIRECT PAINTING:
This process involves painting with inks or oils directly onto a plate, just as if you were working on canvas or paper. A Plexiglas plate allows you to trace a drawing you have already completed prior to printing. Make sure not to apply the ink too thickly to avoid blobs when the image is printed. Just before printing you may want to add a small amount of kerosene to thin the ink for a wash effect or softening of the edges. When complete, the painting is transferred to paper either by hand rubbing or with a press.
DIRECT - TRACE DRAWING:
Using a brayer and printing ink, ink up any type plate- metal, Plexiglas or paper. Lay a clean sheet of dry lightweight paper on top of the inked plate, taping the top down to keep it from moving. Using ball-point pen or dull pencil draw your image on the paper, taking care not to press down with your hand or palm. Carefully peel back the paper to revel the reverse image in ink on the opposite side. This process will leave an impression on the inked plate also, which can be printed to make a negative of the original drawn image. This technique was used by Paul Gauguin and may have been developed by him.
SUBTRACTIVE PROCESS:
Working into a dark field- using a plate completely coated with ink then wiping or scraping away the ink to create the image. Stencils or tape can be used before inking up to create blank or textured areas. These areas can be reworked before final printing. This was the favored technique of Degas and results in a luminous moody image.
The cost is only $45. Supplies as ink, paper, brayers, and inking plates will be furnished. Supplies for students to bring are home made texture and drawing tools, sticks, toothbrushes, combs, be inventive! Wear old clothes, it’s messy!
Students should be able to complete several prints. To register and for complete information, call the instructors, Meredith and Steve, Phone: 547 5923, email: fearnoart@merfnsteve.com.
