Scholarships and Awards Presented at JRAC, May 18

Scholarships and Awards were presented Sunday, May 18 at the Jordan River Art Center during  the opening of the Annual Scholarship Exhibit with many parents, grandparents, and friends in attendance.

Each year JRAC has the honor of hosting several scholarships and awards available to High School Junior's and Senior's living in Antrim or Charlevoix  County. This year the Betty Ann Osborne Memorial Scholarship for $1,500. from Skip Osborne and the Pearl in Hand Scholarship for $1,000 from Betty Beebe went to Maggie Piellusch , Ellsworth High School, Deb Hughes teacher. This award is presented  to seniors only  after the completion of the first semester at an art school of  their choice.  Piellusch plans to attend Michigan State University.   The Huckle Award and honorable mention awards given by JRAC are open to both junior's and seniors, regardless of their area of study.  The Huckle Award for $750  went to Nicole Bryant, Charlevoix,  John Guirey and Mary Beth McGraw, teachers,  The three honorable mention awards for $100. each went to Roslyn Fiel,  Boyne Falls, Melissa Baker, teacher;   David Karlskin, East Jordan, Pat Tinney, teacher;  and Mariah Miller , Ellsworth,  Deb Hughes teacher.  

Other students  receiving participating certificates  were Kayla Mousseau, Danielle Tompkins, Alicia Richards, and Heather Hanson, East Jordan;  Rebecca Featherly, David Gross, Terra Marie Wasylewski,  and Corey Simon, Boyne Falls;  Sarah Barraw, Ellsworth;  Hunter Bergholdt, Collin Moore, Melissa Phizacklea, and Tiffany Grody, Mancelona, Renee Guerriro.

Betty Beebe awarded  her scholarship after interviews  with the students and viewing their work.  The remainder of  the awards were chosen by Jack Trimble, MFA, and retired instructor at Michigan State now living in Alden.  She stated,  “Artistic expression is a means of communication....It is often stated that artists are “gifted or born” with talent, and while there may be an element of truth to the statement, there is also a great deal of work involved in learning how to communicate on a visual plane.”   The gifted, the talented and a great deal of learning were evident in the scholarship exhibit which will be  on exhibition until June 6.   The Center 301 Main St., East Jordan  is open daily from 1—4 pm.
