January 24, 1:30 p.m. Lecture by Peter Balestrieri

HISTORY OF CHINESE AND JAPANESE ART

Peter and Elizabeth Balestrieri now of Bellaire lived in Japan for 20 years where Peter taught drawing and painting. He will bring several art works from his own collection to illustrate the history of this art.

At a young age he studied in Florence, Italy. Before living in Japan they resided in Milwaukee, opened an Art Gallery and Peter taught drawing at the University of Wisconsin. Peter will also be teaching a workshop on Japanese painting. See below for info about this.

January 23, 30 and February 13, 1:00 to 3:00 pm Workshop by Peter Balestrieri

CHINESE AND JAPANESE DRAWING AND WATERCOLOR PAINTING

This workshop will be held in the lower gallery at JRAC. Peter will concentrate on the difference in brush techniques, paper and paint. Limited to 10 students. Call 231-533-6240 for supply list and more information. Fee $60.00

January 31,1:30 pm Lecture/Discussion by Carol Ross

ELEMENTS OF PLEIN AIRE PAINTING

This lecture is based on the notes from her working with Charles Hawthorn and Edgar Payne. She has traveled to California, Vermont and Maryland to study with artists of the Plein Aire Society. Carol will bring her own works developed from the workshops. Also a DVD is available.

Carol, a painter of renown from Boyne City has exhibited throughout Michigan and her work can be found in many collections. She has served on the JRAC Board and the Crooked Tree Board.

February 6, 1:00 to 4:00 pm Workshop with Jacky Trimble and Babs Young

ENCAUSTIC MIXED MEDIA AND COLLAGE

This workshop will be held in the lower level at JRAC. Taking collage techniques to the next level by using encaustic techniques. Workshop participants should bring personal items to include in their collage such as photographs, magazine pictures, buttons, ribbon, etc. Other ephemera and encaustic supplies will be provided at the workshop. Limited to 10 students. Fee: $40.00. Call 231-599-2220 for more information.

Jacky Trimble current work is primarily mixed media in both two and three dimensional form. Her architectural training and experience provide a design basis for her inner pack-rat. She is facinated by all things discarded and recycled and strives to give them a place of honor in the linear environment. She has a BFA and MFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University an has taught a variety of art related subjects to students of all ages and abilities.

Babs holds a BA and MA from Purdue University and taught art in the public school in Indiana and Ohio for over 30 years before retiring to Northern Michigan. Babs has been working with polymer clay since the mid 1990's and metal clay for several years. She also dabbles in photography. She is not nearly as talented as Jacky Trimble, but they play well together and she is good at passing out supplies.

February 25, March 4 and March 11, 3:00 to 5:00 Workshop with Pat Tinney

BEGINNING WATERCOLOR AND COMPOSITION

This workshop will be held in the art room of East Jordan High School. Call Pat for more information and materials list. 231-536-3447  Fee: $60.00

Pat is the EJHS art and drama teacher with many of her students continuing artistic careers. She is a watercolorist of renown having recieved an award from the National Watercolor Society. She exhibits regularly at the Portside Art Fair where she has received the best of show. Her work can be found in many collections.

March 19, 6:00 to 9:00 pm and March 20, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm workshop by Sylvia Walworth

ISSUE, DESIGN, FIND THE TIME: AN ART THERAPY QUILTING PROCESS

This workshop will be held at 1715 San Marino Trail, Eastport, MI. Because this workshop was so successful it was chosen to be repeated. Make a quilt with 9 squares using 9 designs. Fun, creative, surprising and enlightening. Needed are a sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, scissors and thread.
