DICK CUNNINGHAM  CELEBRATION AT JRAC

Sunday , June 2 the Jordan River Art Center will be a place of celebration for Dick Cunningham who passed away Sept. 2012.  Dick served on the JRAC Board for many years and was always most helpful  in any capacity.  He was a man of many different interests, therefore the venue will be varied.

Dick was first and foremost a top rate artist receiving  a degree in studio pottery from Mott Community College, and later a teaching certificate and an MA in ceramics and graphics from Michigan State.   He also received a Ph. D. in curriculum, teaching and education policy. On exhibition will be many  ceramics sculptures and works in oil and a variety of drawings.

In addition to his visual art work he loved restoring antiques cars,  weather permitting one of his restored model A Ford trucks will be  displayed on the grounds of the Art Center.  He was a founding member of the Boyne County Region of the Antique Automobile Association.

A full afternoon program has been planned.  Because Dick had a strong liking to New Orleans Jazz   the award winning Northwest Academy Band  under the direction of Dave Pugh  will  preform at 2:00 pm.  It should be noted that the Band will be also be preforming later in June at the National Alliance or Public Charter Schools  Conference in Washington D.C.  Congratulations!

Dick loved teaching as noted by his students.   He taught at the East Jordan High School for many years and for the past few years taught drawing at the North Central Michigan College, Petoskey.   He  came to the art center to see an exhibit just two weeks before his passing and related  that he was looking forward to teaching again.  He loved to see students grow and develop.

Many of his students, teacher and artist friends will be present to present readings, poetry,  and commentaries  concerning their relationship with Dick.  Several persons unable to be in attendance have written statements.  These will be available for reading.

Following the entertainment, refreshments will be served by JRAC Board of Directors. All persons are invited to this celebration.  The exhibit will be open only until  June 7, 1—4 pm.  Closed Monday. Other times can be arranged by calling Jane Diller, 231 582 6399 or email: jjdesign@twin-valley.net.
