June 15th

The Lepman Farm has classic red barns and out buildings dating back to the early 1900s, rolling farmland and Scotch highland cows, a very old breed with character! Located 1.5 miles north of the Ironton Ferry on M-66. Turn right on Shaw Rd. Phyllis Childs will be our hostess.

June 22

The Jordan Valley Bohemian Settlement is centered in a wide green valley at the junction of M 32 and St Johns Rd approx 7miles east of East Jordan.  St. John Nepomucene Church is a gothic-revival, fieldstone covered structure originally built in 1890. Across the street is a white clapboard schoolhouse dating from 1887 though more recently renovated. Down St Johns Rd a bit  (a mere stones throw) is Norma Petrie’s older-than- centennial-original Bohemian homestead: a charming brick farm house, shaded by elderly maples, lilacs and a catalpa behind a curtain of pines. Directly behind the house is an 1870’s log cabin. Karen Kimmell and Norma Petrie are our hostesses at this site.

June 29

Castle Farms. M-66 south of Charlevoix. You can’t miss this well-known Charlevoix Co. landmark, originally built in the 1920s and designed to replicate a castle in Normandy. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and impeccably groomed with many interesting and fantastical features. In case of rain, we will be able to paint inside and from the porches. The Castle will open early for us at 9 am and we will have access until closing at 5p so you may want to bring a lunch.  Check in at the gift shop and get a map of the grounds. Babs Young is our hostess.

July 6th.

Boyne City Chamber of Commerce Building,

Located 28 S. Lake St., downtown Boyne City. This site has a little of everything “Up North” and all decked out from celebrating Independence Day. The Chamber building is a log cabin with a lovely cottage garden. It is surrounded by water views with Sunset Beach, the Municipal Marina and the Boyne River all within a block. Norma Fell is our hostess and Dick Cunningham our host.

July 13th

Kiteley’s Farm Market, 3805 Brock Rd, Charlevoix.  In Ironton take Ferry Rd west from M-66. turn right on Brock. The Kiteley’s welcome us back to their cutting garden, farm market stand, barn farm equipment, animals, raspberry fields and sweeping vistas. Karen Kimmell is our hostess.

July 20th

Fox Cottage, 01073 Sweet Pea Lane, Walloon Lake. Take Hwy 75 from Boyne City towards Walloon Lake Village. Just before the village turn left on South Shore Drive (look for a sign that says 1499—Down). Proceed 0.4 miles to Sweet Pea Lane and turn right by white fence. The blue-green Fox cottage is the second on the right. Park in the driveway or on the road. The turn-of-the-century cottage, charming guesthouse and gardens featuring decades old phlox and iris beds against the distinctively blue waters of Walloon Lake provide subject matter. Yvonne Schmidt will be our hostess.

July 27th

The Ray Bier Gallery/ Cal Kemppainen and Patti Dimond’s Windridge Studio. 03500 US-31S, approx. 6 miles south of Charlevoix. Turn east onto Ferry Rd. Parking will be at the first driveway on the left after the gallery parking lot.  Ray’s gallery is housed in a classic red and white schoolhouse. While across Ferry Rd., the Windridge Studio consists of a yellow Gothic Revival home with gingerbread trim, pear and apple orchards, and a granary with 360-degree views that include Lake Michigan and the surrounding hills, fields and forests. Margie Guyot is our hostess.

August 3rd

The Farm 2624 Vance Rd. From the traffic light in East Jordan, take M-66 towards Mancelona. At approximately 3miles, veer right on Kidder Rd. After1/4mile take another right on Vance Rd and proceed 1 mile. Turn right into driveway for parking. The Farm has 420 acres of woods, streams, and a large pond with a graceful bridge. Much of The Farm has two-tracks so that artists and gear can get to the spot they chose easily. Deep woods and grand vistas are available, as well as the sweep of the “Great Meadow.” Across the road are paddocks containing a large flock of Scottish Black Face Sheep, part of the menagerie on Irish Acres, whose owner, Rusty Hart also has a garden with over 1500 dahlia plants of many exotic and gorgeous hues which should be well along in August. Howard Ellis is our host.

August 10th

St James Harbor, Beaver Island. A stately lighthouse and lifesaving station mark the entrance to a harbor rimmed by quaint cottages. Two marinas provide all manner of boats from antique motorboats to state-of-the-art racers to commercial fishing boats as subject matter. Transportation is on your own (see contacts below). We will meet at the Ferry Dock on Beaver Island at approx. 10:30 as the morning ferry arrives and will have until approximately 4:30 before the last ferry boards for the mainland.  Our hostess is Pat Tinney who has painted on the island for over 21 years and who can help you find the perfect plein aire view. Dalwinnies and The Shamrock are available for breaks or pack your own picnic. Make reservations early if you wish to spend the night on the island. Participation in this special gathering conveys a lifetime membership in the Beaver Island Royal Watercolor Society. For more information, call Pat Tinney @ 231 536-3447.
