Art/Travel Study Group
A new study group has started at JRAC. For those who love travel and art, stop by our next meeting on Monday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. Andi Gerring, a JRAC member and adjunct art history professor at NCMC, will be leading the discussion. Anyone who has a love of art and is willing to travel great distances to view it, will enjoy this group. BEGINNING WATERCOLOR AND COMPOSITION
This workshop will be held in the art room of East Jordan High School. Call Pat for more information and materials list. 231-536-3447 Fee: $60.00
Pat is the EJHS art and drama teacher with many of her students continuing artistic careers. She is a watercolorist of renown having recieved an award from the National Watercolor Society. She exhibits regularly at the Portside Art Fair where she has received the best of show. Her work can be found in many collections.

Metamorphosis opens Sunday, March 28 at JRAC. This exhibit challenged area artists to create art work based on the idea of transformation or change. Over 50 works of art in all media both two and three dimensional comprise this most diverse exhibit.
Over the years artists have done this in many ways. One example would be MC Escher's tessellation showing a flying bird metamorphosing into a fish. The painter Monet had a different take on change when he painted a series of haystacks showing how light at different times of day created new and changing images of the same subject.
Many digital artists manipulate images to transform them into something new. Other artists take familiar objects and recycle them; transforming them into new images. It is exciting to see how the artists have created work based on this idea.
Doug DeLind of Mason, Michigan, well known for his clay work,was most inspired and submitted two pieces. He relates, “My two pieces represent a metamorphosis because the life drawing on brown paper was rolled on to a slab of clay and the drawing transferred. I then used the drawing on the clay like a ‘Cartoon’ to incise the clay on the drawing lines. The slab was then divided into tiles and allowed to dry, then bisque fired, then glazed and raku fired. So you have the drawing metamorphosed into a clay tile piece.”
The exhibit is open daily, including Easter Sunday, from 1-4 pm at the Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St. East Jordan. Cynthia Tschudy serves as curator and for information contact her at 231-544-6167 or at ctschudy@torchlake.com.

The Jordan River Arts Council is pleased to announce the Scholarship Competition for 2010. Three scholarships plus three honorable mention awards will be given. The Exhibit will take place at the Jordan River Arts Center May 16 through June 11. An opening reception will be from 1:00-4:00 pm on Sunday May 16. Awards will be announced at 2:00 pm. Students must be present to receive any award.
The Betty Osborne Scholarship of $1500 is awarded to a High School Senior
upon receipt of their first semester grades, pursuing the study of art at college
The Pearl in Hand Scholarship of $1000 is given by artist Betty Beeby to a
High School Senior upon receipt of their first semester grades, pursuing the
study of art at college (see requirements for this Scholarship below)
The Huckle Award of $750 is given to a High School Junior or Senior
Three Honorable Mentions of $100 are given to High Schools Juniors or
Seniors

3. Select one of the subjects below and create an 8.5 x 11 drawing to bring to your interview with Betty Beeby. In this drawing you want to show both skills and creativity. Use the drawing medium that best suits your talents and choice of subject matter.
