RARE THREADS on the Fringe - Workshops and Exhibit

Saturday, September 14, at the Jordan River Art Center, the exhibit, Rare Threads on the Fringe opens with over 50 Michigan artists selected who have designed special or unconventional fiber art. Fiber demonstrations, and the annual meeting with food and entertainment are on tap. The day's events begin at 12:00 pm.

The workshops will be led by nationally recognized fiber artists practicing both innovative and traditional techniques in fiber art. The first workshop on Sept. 20 will be Porcupine Quill Work by Yvonne Walker-Keshick, a nationally known quill worker and an Odawa elder. This workshop was so popular two years ago that it is being repeated.

Two other innovative workshops on October 10 and 11 will be the Felted Pouch and the Stretched Imagination Basket by Loretta Oliver of Detroit who isnationally known for her felting. Her work has been published and can be found in many collections.

Other workshops scheduled are: Sept. 21, Beaded Fish Lure Necklace by Erika Faust; Sept. 27, Befuddled by Color, Confined by Design by Sylvia Walworth; Sept. 27, Fashionable Fair Isle (knitting) by Vivian Wanless; Sept. 28, Extraordinary Embellishments by Kathleen Glynn; Oct. 4, Reinventing the Block (quilting) and Oct. 5 Laughing Leaves, both by Frieda Anderson.

The exhibit runs through October 12 with workshops scheduled for each weekend. In addition to the Michigan artists exhibit in the main gallery there will be a student exhibit in the lower gallery of needle felting and fiber tassel books created by area school children during inschool workshops led by the Rare Threads committee. Gallery talks will be every Wednesday at 2 pm. during the exhibit. Student tours are also planned.
