Motorcycle Art comes to JRAC
Back to Archives Index | Back to Main Page

Opening August 17 at the Jordan River Art Center is a most unique and unusual exhibit, Motorcycle Art. Not only included are exceptional fine arts, but also the best of custom and vintage motorcycles. There are paintings - oil, acrylic, and wax; drawings; original prints and posters; sculptures of carved wood, recycled materials, furniture, cardboard, laser cut steel; and photographs. There is also a collection of antique toys and leathers with a unique collection of buttons. Nine motorcycles, both vintage and custom, have been placed in the main gallery.

Perhaps most unique of all is the Skeleton custom bike by Dozer of Auburn Hills. The skeleton has been made of sheet stainless steel and painted realistic. This bike is truly a show piece and has traveled throughout the US.

An acrylic painting, “Off to the Beach” by Mary Ann Archer, Harbor Springs, is interesting in that the beach is viewed in the lady biker's glasses, while the pueblo scene can be viewed in the review mirror. Another painting by Lee Stowe is a landscape with son Mike, age twelve, on his first bike. Mike Stowe, now owner and operator of Great Lakes Motor Works, has loaned several of his bikes and memorabilia.

Also: Larry Butcher, Midland, MI, who has created large shaped canvas paintings. Doug Melvin has not only painted in super realism but also has created a wax painting on burlap. Steve Toornman has created several oils for this exhibit, but also monotypes, relief and intaglio prints. Patrick Bell, Fife Lake, has created a group of small motorcycles, each different carved from wood. The rocking chair by Penny and Mark Postma, East Jordan, called “Off Road” is unique in the fact that the arms have motorcycle handle bars. Fringe and silver tacks. The life size cardboard bike by Mike Lucas has been raced at Shuss Mountain.

Other artists and cyclists participating are: Clayton Boone, III, Marjorie and Jeremy Croteau, Edward Fralick, Michael Kitzi, John McLeod, Peggy Midener, Jane Shaw, and John Stevens.

A catalog has been created by the curators of the exhibition, Pat Poineau, Jane Diller, and John Stevens. The opening coincides with the Lady Bikers’ riding into East Jordan. During the opening refreshments and live jazz music by Roger Lilak and friends will be provided. Door prizes have been donated.

The exhibit will run through September 20 and will be open daily from 1-4 pm. For information or to arrange other times for viewing call 231-582-6399. The Center is located at 301 Main St., East Jordan.
