Scholarships Awarded at Jordan River Arts Center

Sunday, May 13 marked the opening of the Annual Scholarship Exhibit at the Jordan River Art Show. Fourteen students from Boyne City, East Jordan, Ellsworth, Mancelona, and Elk Rapids submitted portfolio type works for the scholarships. Awards were presented by the committee, Sara Vrondran, Chairperson, Babs Young, Marge Teske, and Howard Ellis.

The Betty Ann Osborne scholarship of $1500. provided as a memorial by “Skip” Osborne, her husband, and the Pearl in Hand Scholarship of $1000. provided by Betty Beeby went to Courtney Howes of Ellsworth High School. Courtney is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Howes and Deb Hughes is her teacher. Both these prizes, open only to seniors, are awarded after successfully completing first semester in any college art program. Courtney is planning to attend Northern University in Marquette studying Graphic Design.

The JRAC-Huckle scholarship of $750. went to Travis Nachazel, East Jordan. Travis is the son of Scott and Cindy Meade and Pat Tinney is his teacher. This award is given immediately based on the work presented.

JRAC also awarded three $100. Honorable Mentions to Perry Fish and Shelley Kotesky of Boyne City High School and Tami Lane, Mancelona High School. Other students receiving the certificate of participation were: Sarah Barraw, Amanda Fisher, Mariah Miller, Maggie Piellusch, and Drake Nagel, Ellsworth: David Karlskin, East Jordan;, Ave Bennett and Danielle Burns, Boyne City; and Britni Veeder, Elks Rapids.

Juror for all awards, except the Betty Beeby award, was Chris Allen—Wickler, fiber artist and co-teacher with Ken Scott, of TAP, The Art Place in Suttons, Bay. TAP is an after school program for high school students interested in the arts. Allen—Wickler stated,” The best part in being a juror for this show is having the opportunity to see new work as well as discovering new talent from emerging artists .......... building the foundation for life long learning.” The Pearl in Hand award is given by Beeby after viewing the art work and interviewing the student.

Music was provided by some students from the East Jordan Jazz Band. Refreshments were provided by the committee. The exhibit is open daily, 1-4 pm, Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St., East Jordan, until May 28. For further information call, Sara Vrondran, 231-536-0918.
