Mirror Image Exhibit to Open
Back to Archives Index | Back to Main Page

The Mirror Image Exhibit opens Sunday, March 11 at the Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St., East Jordan. Over 40 area artists accepted the invitation to exhibit their self portrait with the theme that “your art is a reflection of you.” Many different media are represented, both two and three dimensional.

Some highlights are:

  • Kathleen Boyer of Harbor Springs entered her latest portrait in oil, she does one yearly;
  • James Quinlan of Cheboygan entered his stainless steel head shown with a mirror reflecting the backside;
  • James Horton of Ann Arbor entered a print of his body image as a paper doll with all kinds of images to apply to himself;
  • Mary Ann Archer, a jeweler from Harbor Springs entered a watercolor from her time in Arizona with reflections of the Kachina male and female dolls in the eye glasses;
  • Howard Ellis entered two photographs -- earlier and later.

Some students have been invited to participate. For example:

  • Lauren Levanovich of Cranbrook, High School entered a live sized mixed media cut out image on paper;
  • The TAP (The Art Place) students of Suttons Bay have produced animated video portraits of themselves and senior citizens.
  • Melissa Baker, high school art teacher, Boyne Falls, has entered not only her portrait but also, several of her students.

Also, each class at the Ellsworth Elementary have produced a portrait in a different media and technique based on the Art Break Fine Art examples. Janis Dietrich, formerly a kindergarten teacher at Ellsworth and JRAC member is coordinating this project with the teachers. A selection of their work will be exhibited in the lower gallery.

The Exhibit will run through April 6 and be open daily from 1-4 pm. There will be guided tours and hands-on experiences for students, included the kaleidoscope and periscope on loan from RavenHill Discovery Center and a levitator of mirrors built by John Stevens. To schedule tours for this educational or for further information call Jane Diller, 231 582 6399 or the Art Center, 231-536-3385.
