“Barn and Folk Art Exhibit: A Rural Thing“ opens the 2006-07, September 17, at the Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St., East Jordan.
The Barn and Folk Art Exhibit is the culmination of summer art experiences. Included in the exhibit will be:
- Works in watercolors, ink drawings, oils, pastels, photography, and pencil drawings by twenty five “Artists Gathering” artists who met weekly at different Barn sites in Charlevoix and Antrim Co. Other selected works have been included such as the “Ohio Mail Pouch Barn.”
- The Wagbo Peace Center held several sessions for children to experience farm and rural life, which included art. JRAC provided three dimensional barns to paint as well as supplies. Their finished products will be seen in the lower gallery exhibit.
- Folk Art objects on loan have been carefully selected and will be exhibited as a part of the “rural thing.”
- A Photo essay of Barns in Antrim Co. from the Michigan Historical Society will also be included.
At 2:30 pm, following the Annual Meeting, will be a discussion led by Evelyn Johnson, author of the recently published book, “Barns of Old Mission Peninsula and Their Stories.” Photography, oral history, and traditional literary research reveal the barns. Books will be available for sale and can be signed by the author.
This project has been partially funded by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation.
Preceding the Annual meeting the traditional grilled chicken pot luck will be held in Gar Park, across the street from the Center. All artist, patrons, friends and barn enthusiasts are invited, just bring a dish to pass. Chicken, drinks, and place service will be furnished by JRAC. For further information call 231-582-6399.
