Unique or unusual art can be seen in the Vessel Show now exhibited at the Jordan River Art Center. Patrons have been impressed by  those works created by artists that is different from their usually media.  Many of the works are for sale.

For example: Daniel Roache of Petoskey cut up into stripes and wove his “bad” silk screen prints silk screen prints into a papier-mâché bowl, ”For Eating Crow.”  Roache stated, ”This work produced in the vain hope that some value can be extracted from the hundreds of hours of work and the hundreds of dollars in material wasted.......” The bowl exhibited is sold, but he will take orders for additional bowls.

Another project just as unique is the floor length hooded cloak in blue velvet lined with beige rose pattern velvet, named “psych” by Leslie Austin of Petoskey. She says, “I am psych. Protector, Keeper and Holder of Spirit...Soul.  There is nothing that life can throw at you that I cannot shield on my outer cover.... Inside are the soft golden roses of pure light.....” Art patrons are urged to add their own hardship to the outer side by writing on a cloth stripe provided and tie it to the garment. On the inside the artist has written all good traits.

Other area artist who have created something different are: Elaine Levine of Levering, an oil painter, made a bowl of hand made paper that is pliable and fun to squeeze, called “Squeeze Me”  She says, “Experiment!” Pat Tinney, East Jordan Art Teacher and watercolorist has created a vessel filled with water with added natural materials, “Water Dreams.” Prudy Barber of Ellsworth, used a discarded watercolor to made a wall hanging for dried arrangements, “Nature’s Gifts.”   Penny Kristo, Shadetree Stained Glass, created a 24’’ diameter bowl made of sliced colored agates, “Agate Vessel.” Cornelia Dhaseleer, Pottery, Charlevoix created a “Fancy Funky Purse.”  She says she creates something different when she needs a break from clay.

There are many more unique works, as well as the traditional, created by the eighty artists for this most unusual exhibit, which runs through October 14. The Art Center, 301 Main St. is open daily from 1-4 pm. Other times and for information call, Jane Diller 231 582 6399.
