Sunday, March 16, scholarships were presented at the Jordan River Arts Center to senior and juniors from participating schools -- East Jordan, Ellsworth, Concord Academy Boyne, Bellaire, Boyne City, and Mancelona. Receiving the Betty Ann Osborne Award of $500 was Bekah Garibay, senior, daughter of Rob and Cheryl Garibay, Concord Academy Boyne, Julie Stoppel, teacher. This award is only open to seniors with the monetary award given after the first semester of further art study.

The $350 Doris and Bill Huckle Award, open to juniors and seniors was given to Wesley Eggebrecht, junior, son of Dave and Kelly Eggebrecht, Ellsworth High School, Deb Hughes, teacher.

Four honorable mentions of $50 each were presented to Kyria Osterhouse, senior daughter of Mark and Karen Osterhouse,Concord Academy Boyne, Stoppel, teacher: Patrick Teske, senior, son of Tom and Marge Teske, East Jordan High School, Darin Podskalny, teacher; Stephanie Mills, junior, daughter of Ron Mills and Karen Nelson, East Jordan High School, Patricia Tinney, teacher; and Amy Fifelski, senior, daughter of Ken and Donna Fifelski, Bellaire High School, Ray Villivane, teacher.

Other students participating and receiving Certificates of Merit were: Pedro Oviedo, Michelle Hizelberger, Katie Koivisto, and Corey from Ellsworth; Amanda Korthase, Concord Academy Boyne; Joseph Haney, Melody Bishop and Sara Little, East Jordan; Hans Murray, Bellaire; Jennifer Long, Mancelona; and Angel Chipman and Skylar MacNaughton, Boyne City.

The juror, Carol Ross, teacher and artist of both two and three dimensional work stated: “Putting an image on paper or canvas, molding clay with the fingers, or finding shapes through the cameras lens, the artist shares a piece of his or herself with others. This is the joy of being an artist. This collection of work shows the willingness to open oneself to others, so as viewers of this exhibition, we share your emotions and make them our own.”

Also presented at this time was the Charlevoix State Bank Purchase award of $250, open only the East Jordan High School students. It was presented to Melinda Watson, Senior photography student, Darin Podskalny, teacher. The art work will hang in the newly opened Bank in downtown East Jordan.

The chairperson, JRAC Board member, Sara Vrondran, was pleased with the response. She stated, “More interest is certainly apparent. This was the largest number of entries since the inception of the scholarship exhibit. The exhibit runs through May 28 and is open daily from 1-4 pm at the Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St., East Jordan.
